Acquiring a good understanding of numismatics takes some time and effort. This is due to the fact that there are many branches of the numismatics hobby to explore and study.

A stamp collector is called a Philatelist. Stamp collecting started shortly after the adhesive postage stamps were introduced by Great Britain in 1840. In 1841, a women even placed an advertisement in the London Times in which she requested help in collecting stamps so that she could paper a bedroom wall.

So how does one get started on stamp and coin collecting? The American Philatelic Society is a good place to start your stamp collecting hobby. The American Numismatic Society offers a great insight to coin collecting.
