Colon Cancer

We're developing colon cancer at record rates. According to research from the University of California at Los Angeles, the incidence of colon cancer among men in their 20's and 30's has increased by 17 percent over the past 20 years, leading experts to theorize that this generation is paying for its sedentary, fast-food-filled childhood. Worse, the researchers also found that when young men develop the disease, they're more likely to have later-stage and higher-grade.

The best odds of not getting colon cancer is prevention. According to Men's Health, there are six ways in which you can build a cast-iron colon.

1. Eat berries, as in blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry.

2. Radiate Good Health. Get out and enjoy the sun. When sunlight hits any exposed skin, it stimulates the body to produce Vitamin D - a shortage of which can lead to colon cancer.

3. Turn Up Your Training. High-intensity cardiovascular exercise can cut your risk of colon cancer. Credit that to cardio's ability to lower insulin levels. Forty minutes a day of vigorous exercise (running, swimming, cycling, etc.) ought to do it. Can't afford the time? Do what you can, but hit 65 percent of your maximum heart rate or higher.

4. Nibble on Corn. Based on evidence, a compound found in corn prevents the growth of colon cancer. Go easy on the butter.

5. Eat curry. Order up a dish of curry and the yellow pigment (called curcumin) in curry reduces the formation of blood vessels in cancerous cells and inhibits the cells' movement.

6. White out your risk. Men with colon cancer have something in common with arthritic old people: COX-2 enzymes, a part of the inflammation response that can fuel arthritis and and tumors. There are many COX-2 inhibitors in your refrigerator, such as fish, thanks to the omega-3 fatty acids. White tea also has a greater ability to prevent DNA damage and inhibit cancer-cell activity than its green counterpart.
