Coffee
The history and
development of the beverage that we know as coffee is varied
and interesting, involving chance occurrences, political
intrigue, and the pursuit of wealth and power. In the West,
coffee is 300 years old, but in the East, it dates back to
800 B.C.
Coffee was believed by some Christians to be the devil's
drink. Pope Vincent III heard this and decided to taste it
before he banished it. He enjoyed it so much he baptized it,
saying "coffee is so delicious it would be a pity to let the
infidels have exclusive use of it."
Coffee today is grown and enjoyed worldwide, and is one of
the few crops that small farmers in third-world countries
can profitably export.
It is amazing how many different kinds of coffee that you
can buy today. You can get it blended, roasted, and
decaffed. Most commercial coffee growers use primarily the
Arabica and Robusta species. Rarely is coffee designated as
these two species. Soil, water, and other environmental
conditions make the coffee for what it is -- rich in taste
and oh so good! Whether it's Kona, Sumatran, Brazilian,
Kauai, Indonesian, or Tanzanian, they each have their own
rich, distinct flavor.
And it's always good to the last drop!
